Angel Island State Park
(accessible by ferry from San Francisco or Marin)

 INFO   ACCESS  MAP

A gallant effort has been made to provide wheelchair access to the historical features of this park. I haven't ridden the wheelchair- accessible trams that circle the Perimeter Road, stopping at several places of interest, nor did I stop at the visitor center. I did enjoy the accessible restrooms at the ferry terminal in Ayala Cove, and I appreciate the ramped access to the ferries. But note: short steep ramps are involved in getting on and off the ferries. And though all the toilets I saw at the terminal were technically accessible, the only ones I'd call state of the art are the two unisex restrooms after you pass the main building and before you reach the Café.

There's a lot more information about this park in the Wheelchair Rider's Guide. If you are very athletic, or have a good power chair, there's plenty here to explore, more than one day's worth for sure. The ferry and Ayala Cove are likely to be crowded, but other parts of the island will be peaceful, especially if you venture off of the paved Perimeter Road, which is frequently traveled by trams filled with visitors..

If you need assistance overcoming Angel Island's obstacles, check out the State Parks ACCESS page, and/or phone ahead (415/435-5390) to arrange for help.

Details: Ferries go to the island from San Francisco, Tiburon, and less frequently from the East Bay; this LINK may help untangle complications of fares and schedules. Take extra warm clothes, snacks, water... What ever you do, don't miss the ferry back!
