Mount Diablo State Park

Knobcone Pine Road (Curry Point trailhead) C - D; ***; 4 miles out and back; Rainy Weather no

I spent many a happy hour on Mount Diablo as an able-bodied child, but I've rarely been back since I lost the ability to scramble on the weathered crags and charge up the steep trails draped over its sinewy shoulders. But with the good power chair I have now, I found Knobcone Pine Road easier than I expected, though rough enough to be uncomfortable, and occasionally pretty steep. The photos below give a pretty good idea what it's like at the worst; some stretches are much easier, but since the route is downhill right from the start, and thus a tough climb coming back, it's not for the faint of heart.

Details: There is an admission charge to the park, which is reduced by half if you have a California State Parks Disabled Discount Pass. No toilet is provided at Curry Point trailhead, nor, I'm told, at any picnic area within miles

the small parking area has no striping or designated spaces. If the lot were full, parking would be possible along South Gate Road, which is narrow but has slow traffic. Dogs other than service dogs are not permitted on park trails. Bikes are allowed on Knobcone Pine Road, but when we were there on an August weekday we met only one other person in 2 hours. Over the 2 mile distance to Balancing Rock, I saw only one bench. Useable picnic areas can be found at nearby Rock City, but I didn't see any accessible restrooms. Live Oak Campground is designated as having wheelchair access, but is at least .03 mile away.
